COMPOUND SENTENCE
1. Nita
went to the shop
Nita bought a pair of slippers.
à Nita when to the shop and bought a pair of slippers.
2. The
orangutans were left in the park.
The orangutans were not
protected.
à the orangutans were left in the park but they were not protected.
The sentences in the first rows
are complete simple sentences which can stand on their own.
In example 1: the word “Nita” is
not repeated when the sentences are joined.
In example 2: the words “The
orangutans” is replaced by the pronoun “they”.
The two
sentences in both examples are joined by a coordinating conjunction. These are
commonly used conjunctions:
and but
or
nor yet then
